A thriving, diverse city
Despite being the fourth largest city in the United States, Houston is overflowing with trees, green spaces, and several walkable neighborhoods. Houston and the surrounding areas have a very high quality of life, with many diverse cultures and communities. In fact, Houston is consistently ranked as the most diverse place in America, surpassing New York and Los Angeles. You may be surprised by this remarkably liveable city.
A foodie paradise
As a result of the region's long history of immigration, the food in Houston is outstanding and affordable. You'll find creative infusions of cuisines from Mexico, France, the Carribean, West Africa, and the large numbers of German and Czech immigrants from previous generations. In modern times, elements of these traditions are constantly reinvented, and joined by cuisines from Asia, Latin America, and beyond.

Our lab is in Baylor College of Medicine's Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. Our department receives over $30 million in external research funding each year, and ranks second among U.S. medical school basic science departments in NIH funding. We are members of the Center for Precision Environmental Health, where we aim to understand how the genome interacts with its environment.
Above you see the skyline of the Texas Medical Center (this is not downtown!). Biomedical research represents one of the largest industries of the city, in addition to energy and commodities. Our lab is in the Alkek Tower in the middle of the Texas Medical Center, the largest biomedical campus in the world. Within walking distance you can collaborate with researchers and clinicians at Baylor College of Medicine, M.D. Anderson, UT Health, along with many other major research institutions and hospitals. We are also adjacent to Rice University, with its highly ranked engineering programs.
